    Marienburg Castle

    History
This neo-Gothic castle was built between 1857 and 1867 by King George V of Hannover. It was a birthday gift for his wife, Marie of Saxe-Altenburg. Unfortunately, the couple only lived in it for a short period of time, as they were exiled after losing the war against Prussia in 1860.
The building is designed as a Medieval hilltop castle by Conrad Wilhelm Hase and his pupil Edwin Oppler.
Today, Marienburg Castle is the centre of art and culture, as well as a popular tourist attraction. Take an audio-tour and immerse yourself in this historical atmosphere. Let’s go to explore this beautiful castle. Outside you see a lavish appearance with a 44-metre tower. Continue inside, where the building welcomes you with an almost entirely preserved interior. Walk through the beautiful halls which are decorated with period furniture from a collection of the Royal House of Hannover. Visit the private chambers, the state rooms, the library which is decorated with a beautiful umbrella vault, and the castle kitchen which is fully preserved.
After the exciting tour, enjoy some refreshment in the unique café. You find it in the former horse stables of the castle. The interior design includes room high columns, old brick walls, stone horse troughs and hay racks. Choose something from the large selection of freshly baked cakes and pies with a cup of coffee, and just relax.
Before you walk back to the car, buy some souvenir in the shop.

    Rathaus

    History
The city hall was built in a Gothic style between 1268 and 1290. It was constructed from sandstone which was brought from a local quarry. This quarry is still can be found in the forest of Hildesheim, which is called Stone Mountain (Steinberg).
Admire the ogival arcade, the crow-stepped gable, and almost original Lilie tower. One of the interesting features of the tower is its windows. Some of them are small and actually look like firing slits. As you explore this beautiful building, you can see another tower which looks similar than Lilie, but this one was built later in the 19th century.
Take a closer look at the eastern wall, where you see a Medieval inscription says, “Das ist das Garnmaß”. It means “That is the yarn measure”. You also see a shape of a medieval measure, which shows the length of a yarn measure for the market.
Wait and listen to the city hall’s glockenspiel which plays at 12:00, 13:00 and 17:00, as well as on market days at 09:00.
